Las Vegas Wash

Las Vegas Wash
A perennial stream that drains the Las Vegas valley, connecting it with Lake Mead on the Colorado River system. It's unexpected in the southern Nevada desert, and a boon for wildlife--unfortunately, it now consists of treated sewage effluent! Still, you can't tell just by _looking_ at it... Looking downstream; Lake Mead is beyond that brown hill in the middle distance.

But most probably you can smell it ...

Actually, no. It looks and smells just fine; that's the problem! There's a warning sign, however, about there being potentially high microbe counts. The water also is high in phosphate, which has led to algal blooms and subsequent eutrophication in Lake Mead.

Many times I've stayed in the campground near there where the wash runs along its edge -- there's not warning signs in there.
