Palisades of the Desert


Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA. As seen from river level! The light-colored cliff at the skyline is the Kaibab Limestone (above) and Coconino Sandstone (below); the red band below is the Supai Group; and then the grayish cliff below it is the Redwall Limestone (showing its true colors--it's actually gray). The topmost part of the Cambrian Muav Limestone peeks out underneath the Redwall, while the rest of the Cambrian strata are hidden from this viewpoint. The tilted red sandstones in the foreground are the Precambrian Dox Sandstone, part of the Unkar Group.
