Mormon cricket


Anabrus simplex. Actually a katydid rather than a true cricket, but still an orthopterid. Part of a swarm near the Black Rock Desert, Nevada. These insects can be major pests when swarming--the origin of their name, in fact. Here's the Wikipedia writeup: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormon_cricket
No swarms this year because we had a very cold winter, which keeps the insect hatchings down due to freezing lots of the eggs.
