Mormon cricket

Mormon cricket
Anabrus simplex. Actually a katydid rather than a true cricket, but still an orthopterid. Part of a swarm near the Black Rock Desert, Nevada. These insects can be major pests when swarming--the origin of their name, in fact. Here's the Wikipedia writeup: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormon_cricket
No swarms this year because we had a very cold winter, which keeps the insect hatchings down due to freezing lots of the eggs.

My attempt at an insect photo--

It's hard to think of an orthopterid (locusts, grasshoppers, crickets, katydids) that has much redeeming social value from a human standpoint-- ;)
