Look out for the cars!

Look out for the cars!
Feather River route (old Western Pacific), California, very near the Nevada line. There also used to be a railroad line running at the base of those mountains in the distance, but it was torn up some years ago. The economics of modern railroading--if you're not using the tracks 24/7, it's not worth it. Looking northeast.

Diane Putnam, William Sutherland, Tractacus, have particularly liked this photo

A lonesome shot (and funny title)! I imagine some of the BNSF trains through Klamath Falls come this way, but I've never followed the tracks on Google Earth this far.

Thanks, Diane! I don't know how you'd connect to Oregon from here. The Feather River route was the last transcontinental route to be built, ~1900, so it's east-west. It was built over the UP's strenuous objections--ironically, it's now not only still in use but part of the UP system.
