Gradara 2024 – City walls

Gradara is a walled town and it has a castle. It is mentioned in the 5th Canto of Dante’s Divina Commedia, as a backdrop to the love story of Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Rimini. She was married to the brother of Paolo, Giovanni Malatesta. Their marriage was political and she had an affair with Paolo (also married) for ten years before Giovanni surprised them in their bedroom and killed them both somewhere between 1283 and 1286.
