Florence 2023 – The island of Marken

Marken became an island in the Zuyderzee in 1164. It suffered from floods from time to time until 1932, when the Afsluitdijk closed off the Zuyderzee. In 1957 a dam was made to connect the island with the mainland. Marken is popular with tourists, also because the population was traditional and wore their traditional dress far into the 20th century.
