Rijksmuseum 2021 – Sticks of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt

Johan van Oldenbarnevelt was the attorney general of the province of Holland, an important function in the Republic. He was accused by Maurits of Orange of treason, arrested and condemned to death. He was executed, aged 72 years, and the story is that he used a walking stick to climb the scaffold. The Rijksmuseum holds two of them, one is the real one. Van Oldenbarnevelt was rehabilitated and now the Orange family is full of praise.
