Heraklion 2021 – Basilica of St Titus

The first church on this spot dates from around 1000 AD, when the Arabs were driven from Crete by the Byzantine empire. When the Ottomans conquered Crete, the church was converted into a mosque. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 1856 and this building was built. In the 1920s it was converted into a church again and the minaret was demolished.
