Boomsluitershuisje

From 1597 the City of Leiden had an employee who closed off the access to the harbour with beams connected with chains. When the city expanded, the so-called boomsluiter also became gatekeeper of the Zijlpoort (Zijl Gate). This house of the boomsluiter/gatekeeper dates from the 17th century. The gable needs to be protected against the rain as you can see.
