Former building of the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij

This building was built in 1921–1924 for the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij (Dutch Trade Company). The NHM was founded in 1824 by the then king Willem I. It was to a certain extent a successor of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). In the 19th century the NHM transformed into a bank and after some mergers is now the ABN Amro Bank.
The NHM had its headquarter in Amsterdam, but it had since 1910 an agency in The Hague. This building was purpose-built for the NHM. The rather conservative design caused some problems with the architectural committee of the city of The Hague. The design was rejected by the committee and they resigned en masse after the design was approved by the city council.
In 2005 the Raad voor de Rechtspraak (the administrative department for the Dutch courts) is located here.
