The rear tyres and the spare tyre had to be replaced, because they were worn and too old. The front tyres were not so old, but I prefer to have the same tyres on all wheels, so I had new tyres on the front too. I've heard that In France you must have the same tyres on an axle.

These Dunlops were not expensive and had very good reviews and ratings. They are not winter tyres, but I don't drive much in cold weather.

Winter tyres should help a lot with driving in the snow, even if you don't have a 4x4. The only drawback is that winter tyres cannot be used in the summer, so you have to change tyres in Spring and Autumn.

Snow chains can only be used on roads which are covered by a thick layer of snow. Winter tyres can be used on snow and on cleared roads. The rubber doesn't harden in low temperatures (below 7ºC) and the thread pattern helps with driving in the snow. In Germany and Austria they are obligatory in winter, but they have more serious winters. The climate in the Limousin might be too temperate, being so close to the sea.
