Canals of Leiden: de Vliet

The Vliet was an important tributary of the Rhine. The Dutch forces that lifted the siege of the Spaniards in 1574 entered the city on the Vliet. They were greeted by very hungry citizens. Now it is more sedate. This part of Leiden was very poor up to the 1960s, now it is a very desirable (= expensive) part of town.
