The Villa of Poppaea is a grand residence constructed in the first century BC and enlarged in the imperial age. It was being restored at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. It is attributed to Poppaea Sabina, the second wife of the Emperor Nero, but in any case falling within the heritage of the imperial family.
