Fishbourne Roman Palace, Sussex, is by far the largest Roman residence known north of the Alps. It was discovered by accident during the digging of a water main trench in 1960. Subsequent excavations have shown that the site developed from a military base at the time of the Roman invasion in 43AD to a sumptuous palace by the end of the first century.
