Rome - Domus Aurea

In 64 AD when Nero was emperor a devastating fire swept through Rome, destroying large parts of the city.
When the fire was finally extinguished Nero decided to build himself his perfect house over the ashes of the city.
No ordinary house, it consisted of marble-covered pavilions, statues, fountains, sculptures, and nature parks. It was a massive complex of buildings, man-made lakes, gardens, porticos, covered with white marble, ivory and precious materials brought in from around the Empire.
The complex became known as the Domus Aurea (Latin for Golden House).
The Domus Aurea was estimated to have covered between 100 to 300 acres.
After Nero's death, in an attempt to obliterate his memory, much of the decoration was stripped out and eventually Emperor Trajan built his baths on top of it.
It was rediscovered by accident in the 15th century and the remaining part is now open to the public.
