Highbury Station (1904) - 12 January 2020

Highbury Station (1904) - 12 January 2020
This photograph has been longer than most in the making. During the protracted refurbishment of roads and pedestrian areas at Highbury Corner, the view of this disused station building was obstructed by various objects. It is also usually too busy with pedestrians and vehicles to make photography practical. Early on a Sunday morning and after a heavy shower, I was hindered only by pigeons.

The 1904 station is on the side of Holloway Road opposite to the present day entrance of Highbury & Islington station which serves all lines. Services on the Great Northern & City Railway (GN&CR) changed hands over the years and the present day Northern City Line beneath this station is operated by Great Northern. The station building houses signalling equipment for the Victoria Line.

Plans for redevelopment of the station site were mooted in 2017. A fuzzy picture did not suggest a sympathetic redevelopment and I would be disappointed to see this wonderful facade significantly altered.
