Torii (鳥居)

A torii is a traditional Japanese gate that is primarily found in front of shrines and temples. These Japanese archways are the symbol of the transition from the profane to the spiritual world. If you pass through the gate, you are on holy ground. Torii are a very important part of Japanese culture and are often depicted in Japanese art.
