“House. c1855. By George Gilbert Scott. Coursed and squared rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings to ground storey; close studded timber framing above; clay tile roof; ashlar stacks of octagonal section with crenellated caps. Vernacular revival style. 2 storeys; gable end of main range to left, lean-to porch to right. Main range: two 3-light stone mullioned windows to ground floor with rebated surrounds containing leaded casements; 5-light oriel window to first floor with wooden mullions and tracery; jettied gable has diamond pattern framing and cusped barge boards. “The monument includes a single span stone bridge spanning the River Manifold at the south end of Ilam Park, giving access to the garden of Ilam Hall and the Church of the Holy Cross to the north. The bridge has a semi-circular arch and measures up to 20m in length and 4m wide. The existing masonry shows two phases of construction, the earlier of coursed rubble construction with a later ashlar parapet addition which comes to a point over the centre of the arch. The bridge is thought to be at least 18th century in date but was restored in 1839, as an inscription on the bridge conveys. The monument is also Grade II listed, divided between two parishes under NHLE entries 1287065 and 1374599. Tower, possible former dovecote, c1830. Probably built by James Trubshawe. Rough faced ashlar; hammer dressed ashlar plinth and steps. Octagonal plan. Flight of steps leading to ground floor door with Caernarvon arch head; lancet loops in every other face at mid-height; a roll moulded string marks the upper stage which consists of alternate square panels of a blank shield and a cruciform loop; crested eaves to an 8-sided dome of fishscale work capped by a ball finial.
