Fauld Crater near Hanbury (Scan from July 1997)

Fauld Crater near Hanbury (Scan from July 1997)
This picture was taken in 1997, and shows how nature has reclaimed this tragic spot. It was a place for lunch and conteplation on a lovely summer's day.

"...where in underground galleries a huge arsenal of bombs were stored during the last war. On Nov 27th 1944, 4,000 tons of high explosive was accidently ignited, blasting open a crater 400 ft deep and 0.75m across with the loss of 70 lives. The area around Fauld has been mined for the raw material alabaster since the Middle Ages."
