Kingaham Falls

Kingaham Creek descends from a plateau by a series of waterfalls. As it begins its descent it passes through granite geology, then metamorphic geology so the forms of the waterfalls vary, as do the valley landscapes. The granite chutes and cascades are attractive and appealing because of their smooth, rounded forms. Some places the chutes are swept clear of boulders, but in other sections it is as if the huge boulders are tumbled together.
To descend to this last fall and pool, it is necessary to abseil one section at Broken Femur Falls, where significant volcanic activity from ancient times is evident, in the volcanic dykes and crater which the creek has exposed. Climbing back up the valley, one ascends, in turn, Kingaham Falls, Atthow Falls, Blue Dyke Falls, Broken Femur Falls, Bonsai Falls, Broken Mirror Falls, Ochre Falls, Two Step Falls then a number of cascades in the granodiorite sections where faults, dykes and regional joints are like slashes across the valley floor.
