I like the juxtaposion of the old and new. I would prefer to travel on the old road, as always (unless I'm in a hurry of course!).

Many thanks Andy! For me too, the older route looks more exciting, be it on foot or on a mule! :-)

There is also a possibility by train up the Schoellenen gorge to Andermatt or the fastest way through the road tunnel of 17 km or the two railway tunnels one of ~20km and the newest of 57 km. But imo, you'd miss the best part of the journey.
