It is 15.000 years old and lies within the Los Glaciares National Park (Unesco World Heritage) in a landscape with numerous glaciers. Glaciar Upsala is the largest glacier in South America. It is 60 km long . You can reach it only by boat, sailing among the icebergs, or ice islands, floating in Lago Argentino.

true colours

Upsala Glacier is the largest glacier in South America. It is 60 km long . It can be reached only by boat, sailing among the icebergs floating in Lago Argentina. That's what we did. I took this picture from Upsala Glacier viewpoint. It was very windy, but the blue of the lake was almost mesmerising. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bR3N1yBEGbw ( a gift from my friend Beatrice Degan MARS (https://www.test.ipernity.com/home/bea-mars)

Perito Moreno Glacier

The Perito Moreno Glacier( 250 km² ice formation, 30 km in length), is one of 48 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field in the Andes system shared with Chile. This icefield is the world's third largest reserve of fresh water. It is one of only three Patagonian glaciers that are not retreating. After sailing for about one hour, we reached the south side of the glacier, which was only 500 metres far from our boat. Then we moved by bus to the viewpoint to admire the north side.

we do not take a trip...

A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find that after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us. John Steinbeck

flamingoes

When in El Calafate we visited the Laguna Nimez reserve, which concentrates a varied sample of local wildlife. This ecological environment lodges an educational circuit with trails and signposts laid up along over 2,500 meters. The reserve has good vantage points that enable visitors to watch flamingoes, geese, silvery grebes, black-necked swans, ibis, lapwings, ducks, coots, hawks and chimangos, among other 70 species.
