Portreath Harbour, for Rosa.

The 'Pepperpot' at top right was the huer's look out. A huer had the responsibility of calling (hueing) the first sighting of the pilchard shoal. When that happened, the whole town swung into very serious action!
The jetty and round stone hut on the left, having withstood many severe storms, finally succumbed to a huge storm the following year. And rebuilt extremely quickly. When I re-visited in 2014, it was as if nothing had been destroyed! I was impressed!

Pilchard is a fish Ronald. Once upon a time the whole of the Cornish fishing industry revolved around Pilchards. Now.. the fish have gone... it was a disaster of many fishing villages.

I would just add to Pam's reply that they still catch a few pilchards (a larger variety of sardine) but in nowhere like the numbers of yesteryear. They market them today as 'Cornish sardines' since pilchards are seen to have a downmarket image (as herrings are too - unfairly in both cases). As such, they sell as a premium product at a price to match!

You would be surprised, Volker. A surfer is just out of shot. And the local children often swim in this part of the harbour in conditions worse than this as it is relatively protected and they enjoy the high waves!

Thank you Roger! I don't know the east of Cornwall that well. I visited Tintagel once. Polperro once (never again!), Boscastle once, the day before the flooding in 2003 or 4 (I forget which)! And Liskeard (a very pleasing town I thought) once.
