In Spain (and I think France) the red and white waymarks are for long-distance paths, Is this the same?

Hi Andy, in Switzerland the white-red-white signs are the official mountain waymarks. They are used for all mountain and high-mountain situations on existing paths. They show that on these trails you need to be an experienced hiker, without vertigos and you have to be able to orient yourself in an alpine environment, knowing how to use traditional methods such as altimeters and paper topo maps (even without GPS because some places are unreachable to satellites) and you have to know how to deal with weather’s sudden changes. Exposed sides are not excluded. On alpine environnement without paths the official signs are white-blue-white way-marks and you are requestet to be an experienced alpinist with perfect knowledege of alpine activity. The easy paths are signed with a yellow way-mark. All three type of waymarks are usually painted on stones and woods. At the beginning of a trail there are yellow metal signs with the several destinations, time to reach them and grade of difficulty. Those metal signs are also placed in
strategic positions on the trail.

Thank you for the clarification.
The system would seem to be a very good one!
Some years ago I would have aimed for the white-blue-white routes but I'm unfit, out of practice in the mountains and would be happy with the white-red-white routes these days!
Best wishes,
Andy
