What do you see there is the Gotthard Range, which is the geological heart of Switzerland. It shares the northern German speaking side from the southern Italian speaking area of the Country. Thousand of meters below, in the bowels of the mountain, there is the longest railway tunnel in the world. 57 km of high-speed which connects the Canton of Ticino to the rest of the Country but also shortens the distances between Germany and Italy. The historical surface Gotthard railway will remain in duty for local train while freight and long-distance passenger trains transit in the base tunnel.

Yes, here where you are standing the Gotthard tunnel already has perforated the Alps. There was a two-piece TV movie about the history of the tunnel; maybe you've seen it.

Yes, I have seen it. Mmmmh, being one of the biggest Swiss productions, I would have expected a more intensive history. I mean, I liked it, more or less, but I think that it has been a too clement representation of the reality. We all now know that miners have been exploited as modern slaves. The film tries to show it but falls, in my opinion, in different naiveties such the image of a Louis Favre victim like the workers exploited to the last drop of blood. There also have been some mistakes (they maybe are not important, I agree) but in movies there always are many. So, it's better than nothing and it gives the chance to the new generations to discover an important piece of the modern Swiss history. It makes also think that we still have to fight for workers rights...
