Le 2 octobre 1810, Napoléon Ier épousa, à Paris, l'archiduchesse Marie-Louise, fille de l'Empereur François Ier.
C'est à Schönbrunn que leur jeune fils, le Roi de Rome, fut envoyé après la chute de l'Empire français en avril 1814. Devenu duc de Reichstadt, il passa le restant de sa vie dans cette 'cage dorée' . Il y mourut à l'âge de 21 ans, le 22 juillet 1832, dans la chambre qu'avait occupée son père ...
