En raison de sa position à la fin d'un long fjord entouré de hautes montagnes, Akureyri connaît de plus grandes variations de température (des étés plus chauds, des hivers plus froids) que dans beaucoup d'autres parties habitées de l'Islande.

A l'abri de l'industrialisation, ce pays est fort attractif pour les amoureux d'une nature authentique. On peut y voir des geysers, des cascades, des déserts de cendres, des fjords aux eaux pures, des couleurs presque surnaturelles ou encore des glaciers qui couvrent parfois plusieurs milliers de kilomètres carrés !
