Mule Train
This photo, taken by my wife with her phone, is a mule train just starting down the trail from Upper Cathedral Lake. There were, if I remember, six mules loaded with gear for trail maintenance.
Upper Cathedral Lake
From Lower Cathedral Lake we hiked back and around to the upper lake of the same name. This is the upper lake with Tresidder Peak in the background.
Misty Morning on the Vancouver Waterfront
Taken on an autumn morning in Stanley Park and in Vancouver, a very memorable day of mist, autumn color, sunshine and a sense of timelessness.
Bear Grass
Also known as Indian Basket Grass, this plant is not a grass at all but belongs to the Asparagus family. It is known as Bear Grass because bears dig up and eat the lower part of the plant. It is known as basket grass because the tough fibrous leaves were used in weaving baskets by the native Americans.
Santa Elena Canyon
These are the last photos from Santa Elena Canyon. We spent most of the day there hiking and kayaking and then followed the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive back to the north end of the park where we had our campsite for the evening at the Paint Gap Hills The river here is the Rio Grande and the cliffs on the right Chihuahua, Mexico. The mountains in the distance are the Chisos Mountains.
Milky Way Rising at Little Sable
After watching the sunset and a storm at Big Sable Point we headed south at about midnight to Little Sable Point to do some astral photography. The main photo here was taken in the dunes at Little Sable with the Milky Way rising in the background.
Robin
The Robin or European Robin is a familiar bird to us from the time we lived in the UK. I was pleased, though, to get a photo of one of them at Whitepark Bay.
Dunluce Castle
Dunluce Castle is on the north coast of Northern Ireland in County Antrim between the towns of Portballintrae and Portrush. It was built in the fifteenth century by the MacQuillan clan and taken over by the MacDonnells in the same century. Nearby and off the coast is the wreck of the Spanish Galleon, the Girona. Gold and cannons were salvaged from the wreck by Sorley Boy MacDonnell and used to fortify the castle and the survivors were sent to Scotland. The rest of thee treasure was salvaged in 1967-8 and some of it can now be seen in the Belfast Museum. The castle is under the care of the National Trust and though we did not actually explore its ruins we photographed it from the nearby roadside.
Whitepark Bay
This is Whitepark Bay on the north coast of Northern Ireland from a turnout along the A2.
