Laser Light Show Over Vancouver
This was a nightly event during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. We had a ringside seats and were able to watch from the balcony of our daughter's apartment. Been watching a bit of the opening ceremonies in London and was reminded of the festivities in Vancouver.
Olympic Torch and Rings
Since everyone is thinking about the London Olympics which begin tomorrow, I thought I'd post an older pictures from the only Olympics I ever attended. It would be nice to be in London and be part of the excitement, but since that is impossible, memories of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver will have to do. This is the torch from those Olympics with the rings (on a barge in the harbor) in the background.
In the news today ...
This picture was taken in Stanley Park, Vancouver, during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Two Russian newsmen with huge movie cameras were following this raccoon all over the parking lot. He, apparently, was interested only in something to eat and didn't speak Russian anyway. We wondered whether he made the newscasts in Russia that evening since at that time Russia had only won one bronze medal and had very little to feature in the news.
Olympic Gold for Canada
Every night during the Olympics there is a fireworks show in the Yaletown area of Vancouver as part of the festivities there. If Canada has won gold that day, then there are gold fireworks that are part of the display.
These three shots were taken on Monday evening, February 22, the night Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue won gold in the Ice Dancing Finals. The second picture shows some of the gold-colored fireworks that were part of the celebration that evening.
Notice, too, the reflections of the fireworks in the windows of the downtown office buildings in the first and especially the third pictures.
All these pictures were taken from the balconey of our daughter's apartment near Vancouver General Hospital.

Olympic Flame at Night
The pillars of the Olympic cauldron are even more beautiful by night than by day. The arms appear to be lit from within and the contrast of blue and yellow light is impressive. In this shot the Olympic rings in the harbor can just be see at the base of the legs. The authorities have now moved the fence closer, have cut out sections of the fence and replaced them with plexiglass panels and have opened the viewing deck to visitors making it much easier to take pictures of the cauldron.
Olympic Rings in Vancouver Harbor
In Explore February 24, 2010, #71. Thanks to Mario Hernandez for letting me know.
These are on a barge across from the Olympic flame and the waterfront. It was difficult to find a good place from which to get a photo and so this shot is severely cropped.
