Photographed in the Sonny Bono National wildlife Refuge at the south end of the Salton Sea in California, these owls, sometimes known as "Howdy Birds," area feature of the refuge headquarters. We were at the refuge on a trip to California that took us around the Salton Sea and to many other places..

such a funny bird - and great photo of it. i'm so jealous of people who see owls in person. i've only seen them at a zoo in person, though for awhile I think there was an owl that perched on top of a restaurant sign under an overhang in downtown portland - though it may have been a decoy to keep nesting birds away. it was too far away to tell for sure - and i never had a long lens with me to check.
