Cassin's Finch

Cassin's Finch
We did not recognize these at first as different from the House Finches that are always at our feeders but these larger and more elegant birds were there in the spring, though we have not seen them since. They are distinguished by their rosy crest and size from the House or Purple Finches we see.

On another note, our presence on Ipernity well be a bit spotty. We are in Edmonton for a couple of weeks helping our youngest daughter who had a baby grandson last week. We are doing the cooking, cleaning, child care and helping in whatever ways we can while she recovers as well as enjoying our grandchildren.

It is cold here, about -40F (also -40C) here, so cold that we are not even going outdoors. It is supposed to warm up a bit over the weekend, but for now it is so cold that the children do not have school. We went from lots of snow and relatively warmer temperatures to less snow and bitterly cold temps.

Oh my, what a beauty! These birds give me conniption fits because the three species are so hard to tell apart, esp if you don't remember their size! I believe we've had all three at our feeders and I expect I've misnamed some, but in any event, this picture is wonderful--I'll have a peek at your other pictures too when I'm done here.

Glad to hear that you arrived in Edmonton safe and sound...holy COW, that's some COLD WEATHER! In fact, I can safely say I've never been in weather that cold. WOW! You're not going outside? Why Ron, whyever not? It's barefoot-beachwear weather for sure! The sand is ever so white and burns curiously until your skin is numb! :D

Thank you so much for your lovely comments regarding my mushroom show. Way to make my day--the room is warm from my glowing face! :) It is particularly wonderful to be able to share some of the way I discover subjects and showing how I find these little guys was such fun. :) Regarding Nancy's flair for this sort of thing, I cannot help but imagine what it would be like to wander around with you guys, discovering marvels everywhere we go! :)

Oh dear, the snow plow sure has made it a pain for you and the postman. Hard to come up with a proper solution though, isn't it? Well...spring. That will do it! :D

Regarding HDR, I can see why your traditional path from film to digital would give you extra discomfort with the artificial appearance of heavy-handed HDR that makes us want to vomit! The thing is, I just have to think that a lot of people either don't have proper monitors to see the overblown saturation and HDR effects, or they don't have a very sophisticated eye, or maybe it's a combo...and then some probably think that the more "out there" the picture appears, the more people will like it. In any event...as Mr. Creosote would say in Monty Python..."Better get a bucket...I'm gonna BARF." :D

Your comments on Nancy's dental work have me holding my jaw and moaning in pain...omg that cannot be fun for her, poor dear. Steve's got similar issues and $$ in work that needs to be done. We're hoping the insurance will be a big help, he's been putting off this work for a while now and it's time to get some of it done.

What a pain it must be to deal with all of the bureaucracy at Neal's school. You guys sure do your best though. I admire the dedication, as I've said, and hopefully you'll be able to get through the issues eventually!

AU...yeah, we see eye to eye on wanting to spend time there and having a proper long visit in a 4wd! I hope it's in our cards, how I'd love to go back for a long stay! And I agree with the amazement of all that is different there. Fabulous, fascinating and wonderful!

Ok, I have a lot of catching up to do so off I go! Have fun with the new babykins! :)

A great series, that red top certainly is distinctive!

Congratulations on your new grandchild and I'm sure you'll have a great time indoors with your other grandchildren, Ron. Those Edmonton temperatures belong in the Antarctic!

Wonderful portraits of this beautiful species, Ron, but first of all my heartiest congratulations to parents and grandparents on the newborn baby! Wishing you a good time and much joy together. :)

The blatant climatic contrasts could hardly be greater. In Australia devastating bush fires, in other parts of the world torrential floods dominate and with you icy cold like at the polar circle. Nevertheless, I hope you are well and wish you all the best. Take care.

What a pretty bird. I'm sorry to hear of your weather. We are about to be hit by a snow storm, but it was 74 degrees last weekend, shattering the old record by 13 degrees.
