Shield Spring

Shield Spring is a hot spring in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone. The colors of the hot springs in Yellowstone are determined by their temperature. Differently colored bacteria live at different temperatures in these hot springs which are hottest at the center and coolest at the edges. This spring must be very hot, near boiling, since it is almost all blue which means few or no bacteria living in the water and coloring the spring.
