Eastern Fairy Slipper

This the Eastern Fairy Slipper, Calypso bulbosa var. americana, a variety that is found across the United States and Canada. It differs visibly from the Western Fairy Slipper, shown below, in its yellow "beard" and relatively unspotted lip. These were photographed in eastern Washington on a recent orchid-hunting trip (only the Western Fairy Slipper grows west of the Cascades).
