Dog Lichens

These are Dog Lichens, Peltigera leucophlebia, photographed along the Berg Lake trail in Mount Robson Provincial Park. The name for these comes from the resemblance of the fruiting bodies to dog's teeth, and following the medieval doctrine of signatures which saw in these resemblances a sign that they were of medicinal use, they were ground with black pepper and served in milk as a cure for rabies.
