Western Peony

Western Peony
This is the Western or Brown's Peony, not what one usually thinks of when one hears the word "peony." It is a plant about a foot tall (30cm) with silvery, divided foliage and pendant flowers that are around two inches (5cm) in diameter. It grows in very dry areas in eastern Washington and is a plant that I have seen several times but never in flower. This spring I was very fortunate to find it still in flower in Derby Canyon near Peshastin, Washington.
