Zygostates alleniana

This is another miniature orchid and it's from Paraguay. It belongs to a group that is made up of tiny little plants with white or green flowers called the Ornithocephalinae. This plant is 3-4 cm tall and the flowers are .5 cm. These flowers are non-resupinate, which means that unlike the majority of orchids they do not twist when opening to hold the lip at the bottom of the flower. Here, the cup-shaped green and white part of the flower is the lip and the rather odd-looking orange and cream part the column, which, with a bit of imagination, does look like an up-side down bird head.
