Dad, mid 1960s

Dad, mid 1960s
Early morning in a suit, so a good guess is that he's ready to leave for SFO (San Francisco Internat'l Airport). He's got that, "Let's get going" look. We would all drive him to the airport and wait at the gate until his plane was in the air, on his way to Norway, Peru, Greenland, or Djibouti. All of it was a very big occasion and we dressed up. He would be gone 2 months...5 months...8 months...home for a few weeks and gone again. I don't know how we stood it.

It sounds like life in the Services Diane...............I hated leaving my family and I expect your Dad did too, but I also loved my job and it paid the bills and put a roof over our heads. It also made the time we had together much more precious.

Very much like that, Keith. I suspect that Dad liked his work more than he liked being home. I said that to Mom, once, and she agreed. It became just a fact of life, but early on it was very painful. Despite all of that, he really was sort of a swashbuckling guy! He had an exciting life and was a fabulous role model for being daring, seeing the world, and so on.

Ahh, the creases! The narrow tie! The horn-rimmed glasses! Relaxed and focused, that's a good reading of that pose and was, in fact, his predominant manner. I suspect he wasn't really as relaxed as he always seemed.

I just discovered this comment, Rapi. Very funny, but no, I did not crease his pants! The dry cleaners did that. I was not above ironing shirts, however.

He built communication antennas, like microwave and other types. His contracts were with American embassies all over Africa one year, military bases and so on.
