Wanblee, South Dakota, 1994
Birthplace of my mother and her older sister. If you've ever wondered what the middle of nowhere looks like, now you know.
Pine Ridge Sioux Reservation. On the back of this photo my mother wrote:
"Your Great Grandpa (Jacob Woods) was sent [in about 1900] to teach there. Some of the Sioux young men who attended the high school were terrific basketball players (Aaron Two Elk was one of them). Now, there is a very nice modern one, Crazy Horse School.
Wanblee from Hutchings' land. Eagle's Nest Butte in distance."

From Wikipedia: "Wanbli is the Lakota word for eagle, and the town was named for its proximity to Wanbli hohpi paha (Eagle Nest Butte)."
