Muskox (Ovibos moschatus)

Muskox (Ovibos moschatus)
Spotted in Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella national park, Norway.
These ice age animals are not afraid of humans and do not run away when they see you. They will however consider you a predator and may attack if you get too close. I was lucky to stumble upon two grownups and two calfs shortly after starting my walk. I also saw 10 animals in a group in the far distance.

Yes, but they are not as big as they seems, just around 1 meter to 1,4 meter shoulder height and 2 to 2,5 meter long. However, they are heavy and can reach a speed of 60 m per hour.

Nice catch and close up.
We had a guided safari there and saw them too - but only from far distance. Just spots on the photos (which, btw. I cannot access - burnt CD became unreadable after my return).

They guiders will try to prevent you from getting too close, 200 meter is said to be a safe limit. I believe I was like 70 meter from them, but that was how close I was when I first saw them because of the terrain. I also used my newest and most powerful lenses. I shot this at 1344 mm.
