➽ Auf einer, schon seit 1806 als Großer Exerzierplatz, genutzten Fläche befanden sich seit Mitte der 1930er Jahre 3 eigenständige Kasernen der Deutschen Wehrmacht. Diese blieben im Zweiten Weltkrieg weitgehend unbeschädigt und wurden sofort nach dem Krieg von der US-Armee übernommen. Der gesamte Komplex wurde in Reese-Kaserne umbenannt (nach James W. Reese, Träger der Medal of Honor). Heute beherbergen die Gebäude der Reese Kaserne den Kulturpark West und in der ehemaligen Kantine befindet sich ein gleichnamiger Musikclub ! Die Fassade wurde unter Einbeziehung der alten Wandmalerei gestaltet! Diese alte Wandmalerei von 1934 stammt von dem Kunstmaler und Graphiker Günther Graßmann (* 1900 - † 1993). Ab 1925 war er als freischaffender Künstler tätig - 1937 wurden drei seiner Werke als „Entartete Kunst“ beschlagnahmt. Danach verlegte er sich auf Arbeiten im Kasernenbau. Er bearbeitete ca. 38 Aufträge des Nazi-Regimes zur malerischen Ausgestaltung von Wehrmachtsgebäuden. Graßmann beschäftigte mehrere Künstler, vor allem solche mit Malverbot. Die Bauleitungen von Wehrmacht und Luftwaffe boten bei künstlerischen Arbeiten gewisse Freiheiten. These remained during the WWII largely undamaged and were taken immediately after the war by the U.S. Army. The entire complex was renamed to Reese-Kaserne (Barraks) (after James W. Reese, a carrier of the Medal of Honor). Today, the buildings of Reese Barracks houses the Kulturpark West (Cultural Park West) and in the former canteen (German: Kantine) is located an eponymous music club ! The facade was designed with the involvement of the old wall painting! This ancient wall painting of 1934 was made by the German painter and graphic artist Guenther Graßmann (*1900 - †1993). From 1925 he worked as a freelance artist - in 1937 three of his works were confiscated as "degenerate art". After this he moved to work in barracks. He edited about 38 orders of the Nazi regime for the pictorial design of Wehrmacht buildings. Grassmann employed several artists, especially those with painting ban. The construction management of the Wehrmacht and Airforce provided certain freedom in artistic works. Diese blieben während dem 2. Weltkrieg weitgehend unbeschädigt und wurden direkt nach Kriegsende von der US-Armee übernommen. Der gesamte Komplex wurde in Reese-Kaserne (nach James W. Reese, einem Träger der Medal of Honor) umbenannt! Um das Kasernengelände herum wurden Wohnsiedlungen wie Centerville und Cramerton für die Familien der US-Soldaten gebaut. Auf dem Gelände selbst entstand eine US-High-School und ein Nachtclub mit Kasino. Die US-Army nutzte die Reese-Kaserne bis 1993/94. Am 19. Juni 1998 verließ die US-Armee nach 52 Jahren Augsburg. Die Abschiedsfeier fand mit militärischem Zeremoniell, Truppenparade, US-Militärchor, und gemeinsamen „großen Zapfenstreich“ deutscher und amerikanischer Soldaten statt. Heute beherbergen die Gebäude der Reese Kaserne den Kulturpark West , das ehemalige Theater blieb als “Reese Theater” bestehen! On the site itself, a U.S. high school and a nightclub with casino was built. The U.S. Army used the Reese Barracks until 1993/94. On 19 June 1998 the U.S. Army left Augsburg after 52 years. The farewell ceremony was held with military honors, military parade, U.S. military choir and a common "Big Tattoo" with German and American soldiers. Today, the buildings of Reese Barracks houses the Kulturpark West (Cultural Park West) , the former barracks theater hall still exists as "Reese Theater"! ➽ Das Büro für Popkultur, das Tiefbauamt, der Kriminalpräventive Rat der Stadt Augsburg und der Graffiti-Verein „Die Bunten“ haben vor einigen Jahren in Zusammenarbeit ein Konzept für legale Graffiti- und Street Art-Flächen erarbeitet. Ziel des Projekts „Schwabenwand“ war, die Zahl illegaler Graffiti durch mehrere legal zur Verfügung gestellte Flächen in verschiedenen Sozialregionen der Stadt zu reduzieren. Die Freiflächen bieten vor allem auch Entfaltungsmöglichkeiten für Anfänger. The aim of the project "Schwabenwand" ("Swabia wall") was to reduce the number of illegal graffiti by several legally provided spaces in various social areas of the city. The open spaces provide possibilities of development especially for beginners.
