The Green Knight at Pickering

27 Apr 2014 15 20 813
Taken inside Pickering station, now used as the terminus of the, 'North York Moors' historical trust line. The residual steam and smoke here combining to give a nostalgic feeling of the age of steam. See PiP " Essentially a tender version of the Standard 4 Tank like 80135 and 80136, the 4-6-0 version of the British Railways Standard 4 design was intended for general passenger and freight use on lines where the usual "Black Five" and similar locomotives would be too large or heavy. 80 examples were built between 1951 and 1957 and were allocated to the London Midland, Western and Southern regions. 75029 was built in 1954 and was decidedly mobile during her service life, being allocated to depots across the Western region including Reading, Oxford and Swindon, with a stint in Wales at Machynlleth and Croes Newydd sheds in the early to mid sixties. Painted in British Railways' Brunswick Green livery used on passenger engines, "The Green Knight" has been a stalwart of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, including being passed to work to Whitby and Battersby on the national network. A crack in the firebox was identified in 2015 and she is currently awaiting attention. " NYMR

Victoria station, Manchester

25 Jul 2018 25 52 752
Old and new at this station. Normally considered as one of Manchester's two main railway stations it is now shared with many of Manchester's trams. Originally opened c1844 and had the reputation for being the worst category B interchange station in the United Kingdom in 2009. Here we see the new roof and tram interchange added in 2015. Behind is the old main building edifice. I remember catching the steam trains to and from my home town of Oldham under imposing but yellow smoked grimy glass held up by Victorian wrought iron frames here. Always quite imposing but now a very much more modern feel to things. This is actually a Bombardier M5000 built in Bautzen, Germany from 2014. It is on its way to Manchester Airport. See PiPs for other internal views

Its hot out here in Aruba! Time for a little cool refreshment. Good job Mr Shaved Ice is here, not withstanding that noise racket caused by the bolt-on generator. Enjoy

The start of another Havana Grand Prix, maybe not but a glimpse of the traffic situation here in Havana old town Cuba it is. Lots of these vintage sedate cars around here. Quite refreshing to see.

Another busy day at Embsay

30 Oct 2018 18 24 409
0-6-2T, No. 85 is visiting the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway from the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Here we see it returning to its awaiting carriages after it has just reversed up this track and the switch having been set to the straight position. Plese see See PiPs - As usual -best full screen on black. No. 85 was built in 1899 by Neilson Reid for the Taff Vale Railway, which connected the Cardiff area with the coal mining industry located a few miles to the north. When the Taff Vale Railway was taken over by the GWR in 1922 the engine soon became surplus to requirements as the GWR had a policy of standardisation. In 1927 the engine was withdrawn and in 1929 the engine was sold to the Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Colliery Co. in County Durham to haul coal trains between the inland collieries and the coast. When the coal industry was nationalised in 1947 it became NCB No. 52 and remained in service there until 1968 and following withdrawal arrived on the Worth Valley Railway in December 1970. lt was re-built to its original outline by a group of Worth Valley volunteers in the 1990’s and gave good service until withdrawal in 2010. Seen as an ideal locomotive for the branch line, TVR No. 85 entered the workshops at Haworth and re-entered service at the 2016 Winter Steam Gala in its original fully lined out Taff Vale Railway livery.

As an old canal barge awaits some attention these geese go sailing by. I see them coming before they are framed by this natural red reflection box but just a few more moments and.....got em! * Canadian Geese at Ashton-u-Lyne Canal Basin * Enjoy full screen

Life on the canal

02 Oct 2019 28 35 327
It looks a good life - cruising up and down this delightful canal. Other boat owners have decided to rest up here, maybe to take a snack in the nearby garden centre cafe. Taken on the 'Staffordshire & Worcestershire' at Greater Haywood in Staffordshire.

Pride and joy gates.

Sometimes, I have to try to break the habit of landscape fences for something more urban. I saw this old, almost vintage car not far from my home some time ago now. At one time somebodies pride and joy, now forlorn behind these old gates. HFF, enjoy the weekend. This Fifty Six year Humber Imperial was the top of the range Humber. It was based on the Super Snipe series of cars and was built at the Rootes factory at Ryton-on-Dunsmore near Coventry

The mountain narrow gauge railways of Wengen, Swit…

09 Feb 1984 19 16 248
Here is a selection of the trains running on those mountains at that time, now long superceded. The Wengernalp Railway (WAB) is a 19.11 kilometres long, rack railway line in Switzerland. It runs from Lauterbrunnen to Grindelwald via Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg at 2,061 metres above sea level, making it the world's longest continuous rack and pinion railway. The name refers to the seasonal mountain pastures above Wengen. It has a track gauge of 800mm (2'7", UK=1435mm) Originals on 35mm slide. Nice full screen.

The Wonders of Mallorca: Sóller – Its trains and…

22 Sep 2014 15 16 262
Taken from the terminus at Sóller, it has just been filled to the brim with tourist and heads back to Palma. Unfortunately, we did not have the chance to take a trip on this. Instead we used the local Port de Sóller to Sóller tram to get here and back. See PiP's. This famous 110 year old narrow gauge railway runs 27km from the capital Palma to the town of Sóller. At 3ft wide (914mm) it is a true narrow-gauge track and runs through some of the most spectacular scenery in Majorca. This overcomes the natural barrier of the ‘Sierra de Alfàbia mountain range’ in just 7km. It runs thorough 13 tunnels and over several bridges, the most impressive being the five arched “cinc-ponts” viaduct. As you see here, the engines are electrified by over-head wires. Whitby Swing Bridge in action

26 Apr 2014 19 28 215
After reading Rosalyn Hilborne's comment on the previous page I tried to take a look on line to see the bridge opened and was surprised of how few there were and also what poor quality ones there was of them. So I took a look in my archives and found this from 2014, when we were last there. Hope you enjoy it. As always, deserves full size.

A ride along Loch Arklet

07 May 2021 38 67 280
A ride along this remote Loch in the Trossachs is without doubt a treat. It is relatively small at just 2.5mile long and a half mile wide. Just two miles further, past the dam, in the direction of this cyclist we come to the small hamlet of Inversnaid on Loch Lomond. And yes, this is the main road -you can just make out the frequent passing places on the right hand side. Enjoy full size and have a great week.

In the shed

01 Oct 2020 21 25 253
.A look into one of the loco sheds at the Grosmont NYMR depot and we see this once stately steam engine. Like many of these, this has got a lot of history. Engine 65894 (a J27) built for the LNER railway, has a 0-6-0 wheel configuration, and was built in Darlington in 1923 at a mighty price of £3537. She spent most of her working life on the north east coast pulling coal and later spent time on the York-Scarborough route with local goods. It has been restored several times and came to the NYMR in 1971 where it was a mainstay of its services. In 2018, at Grosmont, it underwent an overhaul at a cost of £450,000. I have no doubts that she will be running happily again soon. Enjoy. full screen Herb More info: preservedbritishsteamlocomotives.com/65894-lner-2392-lner-5894-br-65894

Grosmont and the NYMR

01 Oct 2020 19 18 232
A glimpse into old England here as we spend a few hours at the small village of Grosmont in the North Yorkshire moors. This is a busy working home for the NYMR heritage Railway (North Yorkshire Moors Railway). Its main line runs from Pickering to Whitby via Goathland. Grosmont is the start of its recent extension to the seaside town of Whitby and also houses the lines big maintenance yard. Enjoy. Herb
