I've never seen a walnut in it's natural state..............only in shops. A fascinating image Petar!

Really, Keith!...But, if they have not already fallen out of the shell, if you do not use gloves,your hands will to you blacken and it will be difficult to wash.

My great.grandfather in Derbyshire successfully grew a walnut tree and harvested a good quantity of nuts: half for pickled walnuts (using the immature whole nut and kernel) for Christmas and half for the mature nuts themselves. He particularly enjoyed a simple supper in winter of a cox's orange pippin apple, a piece of mature cheddar, an oatmeal biscuit or two, a handful of walnuts and a glass (just one) of Madeira. He lived to 97 so can't have been bad!
It looked interesting to me at 10 years old (we were fed baked beans on toast as I recall). Now, 50 years later, I like the idea of this supper more and more!!!

Just had a look, where to find Derbyshire, and I must admit, your great grandfather must have had a good hand for trees. Mid England seems to me not the best climate for growing walnuts (maybe it's easier nowadays).
And the supper recipe sounds just great - the older ones mostly did know far better, what's good for them. And they havn't had that much choice, like ourselves.
