Der Legende nach fielen dem heiligen Petrus die Schlüssel aus der Hand, als er die Himmelspforte aufsperren wollte. Dort, wo sie auf der Erde auftrafen, wuchsen von da an die Schlüsselblumen. Daher stammt auch der volkstümliche Name „Himmelsschlüssel“.
