Gasteracantha cancriformis (female)

Gasteracantha cancriformis (female)
When walking through the forest this time of year, I am sure to get the webs of these spiders on my face.

I have never seen these before. Very nice. Are they big?

Thank you, Marja . This species lives in North, Central and South America, and also in the Caribbean. The females are about 10 to 15 mm wide.

Thanks for the visit, Pam.These are smaller than the garden spiders. They are about 10 to 15 mm wide. I encounter them only in the forest in autumn. If the light is good, I can usually avoid getting caught in their webs.

Yes, they look like a face. I wonder whether that helps them catch prety.

They have very good defense, Fred. I doubt any bird would eat two of these.
