Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina)

Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina)
Apparently, Asker Garip has not found this individual. The gender can be determined by eye color. Females have brown eyes; males have red eyes. Actually, I can't tell if this one's eyes are red or brown.

Annemarie, Ernst Doro, sunlight, Nouchetdu38 and 4 other people have particularly liked this photo

Yes Ronald.. but the basal carapace is mostly what I was going by. I think the males have a longer more pointed narrower protrusion .. think "rhino horn !!" helps them when sparing with other males.

Sieht aus, als hätte sie den Kopf auf die Hand gestützt und nachenkt: "Wo wollte ich eigentlich hin?"

Possibly she was considering what the man with the camera was planning ;-).

My "Audubon Society Field Guide" says males have red eyes and a "depression in the rear portion of the plastron", which I can't see on this photo. I think I agree that this one's eyes are brown. I'll watch for more subjects.
