This beautiful photo shows that trees, when left to their own devices, reach up for the sunlight and grow quite tall.

It is very interesting to watch the forest mature. When we moved here, the trees were only 5 - 10 meters tall, and mostly pine and sweet-gum. Now many of the pines are dying, and being replaced by oaks and sycamores. Sweet-gums are surviving.
