Ring-necked snake (Diadophis punctatus)
A very small snake found throughout most of the United States. It is about the size of a pencil. I found this one when I picked up a water tub to empty it.

Thanks, micritter. It is a very tiny snake that is a danger only to very tiny prey. There are some water moccasins and rattlesnakes in Mississippi, but I've never seen them near my house.
