Horse chestnut leaves

When the leaves of the Aesculus hippocastanum fall, the stalk breaks away from the twig it was attached too.
As they detach, the stalk leaves a scar on the twig which is said to perfectly resemble the shape of a horseshoe. The scar is even complete with nail holes. Here it is possible to see the horseshoe shaped scar left by last year's leaf on the twig.
The rings on the bark shows how much the twig has grown in a year. The amount of growth in 2022 is greater than that of 2021.
