I am having terrible dust problems
- 04 Jan 2009The Canon 1Ds Mark III (as well as the 1D ... see below) is supposed to have solved the dust problem that has been a feature of Canon DSLR cameras ever since they entered the market. In my case the dust problem is as bad as what I had with the 5D. Just before Christmas I had my camera cleaned by the local Canon agent and already I have about ten persistent spots. ---oOo--- To combat against stray dust that enters the camera and adheres to the image sensor during a lens change, the 1D Mar…

Protests are my thing today.
- 03 Jan 2009I went out to Tante Zoes for lunch today and on my way home I came across a group of people protesting against the air attacks on Gaza. I had my camera with me and took a number of photographs which are being uploaded as I write this. Unfortunately the quality is very poor as I had forgotten that I had changed the ISO settings ... there was a lot of noise and I had to delete many.

Teachers Protest In Dublin
- 03 Jan 2009Today I am planning to upload a series of photographs taken during the recent protest march by teachers. The demonstration, which has been organised on a joint basis by the INTO, TUI, ASTI and IFUT unions, began Parnell Square at noon. The protesters, marching under a “Schools United” banner, will travelled from Parnell Square, down O’Connell Street and onto D'olier Street before heading up to Nassau Street and finishing with a rally at Merrion Square.

The uploading continues.
- 02 Jan 2009I spend every second Christmas in Brussels and hope to be there next Christmas. In 2007 when I was last in Brussels I used a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 which was supposed to be a good compact digital camera. I must admit that I did not like this camera (I can't really explain why) and shortly after my return to Dublin I replaced it with a Sigma DP1 (described below). Anyway, I am now uploading the photographs in question. I should mention that the DP1 is not an easy camera to use and that people…

2101 Photographs Have Been Uploaded
- 02 Jan 2009I have managed to upload more than 2000 photographs but I still have to add descriptions and tags to many of them ... please be patient. Times are bad and may be getting worse I just received the following email regarding a site which was home for many photographers Today is a particularly sad day for all of us at JPG and 8020 Media. We've spent the last few months trying to make the business behind JPG sustain itself, and we've reached the end of the line. We all deeply believ…

Today is my birthday.
- 01 Jan 2009HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL! The light was very poor today ... overcast, grey sky and very cold. I took a few photographs in a graveyard using a Sigma DP1 camera. The photographs will be uploaded later today or sometime tomorrow. If you like cemeteries you will love Mount Jerome Cemetery, often called Harold's Cross Cemetery - here wealthy Victorians set monuments to themselves, built to last. They couldn't take their wealth with them. So they made sure they could still flaunt it for decades an…

Uploaded the "Dublin Zoo" collection today
- 31 Dec 2008This is the last day of 2008. Tomorrow is my birthday ... I have never met anyone else with New Year Day as their birthday. I am now in the process of uploading some of my "Dublin Zoo" photographs. When Dublin Zoo first opened in 1830, the animals, which were supplied by London Zoo, were considered exhibits. People rushed to catch a glimpse of wild and wonderful creatures they had only heard about but never seen. In fact during an open day in 1838 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Cor…

Uploaded the "Drogheda" collection today
- 31 Dec 2008Drogheda is an industrial and port town in County Louth on the east coast of Ireland , 56 km (35 mi) north of Dublin . Drogheda is the largest town in Ireland, recently surpassing its neighbour Dundalk. The River Boyne divided the town between County Meath and County Louth until the enactment of the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898 which saw a large area of Drogheda south of the Boyne become part of an extended Co Louth. With the passing of the County of Louth and Borough of Droghe…

THE STREETS OF DUBLIN PROJECT
- 31 Dec 2008A few years ago I started a project "The Real Streets Of Dublin" the purpose of which was to document the ever changing city of Dublin (Ireland). Along the way I have encountered many problems mainly caused by storage and bandwidth limitations but despite the problems I have managed at accumulate and publish about 25,000 photographs. I also extended the scope of the project to include the rest of Ireland. The target is 40,000 photographs by the end 2009. The problems were more than compensa…
