I watched Valkyrie this past week, and I enjoyed it. Tom Cruise plays a Nazi trying to remove Hitler from power. There's lots of great actors in it... and Tom Cruise as I mention ;) Actually, I really don't have a lot against Cruise in the movie world. It's not that I think he's an amazing actor, but I've enjoyed many of the characters he has played (as similar as they may have been). Anyway, I'm getting off track.
One of the things I found interesting about the actors was that even they ranged from American to European actors of all kinds, none of them (at least the ones I recognized) attempted to put on a fake German accent. I'll commend Bryan Singer for this (I'm guessing it was his call as director) as it shows that they were focus on more important things to get the story across. It wasn't distracting to drama, it did not make it any less involving, and frankly I think Cruise would have done a terrible German accent.
I enjoyed the story, and as it points out itself, it's an important one to tell. Movies like this, Schindler's List, and the lesser known Conspiracy, all tell the story of Germans in WW2 that did not support Hitler's decisions. I think we forget that the Germans, even those that wore the Nazi uniform, were not entirely comprised of these evil beings, hell bent on destroying all that was good.
Anyway, an interesting story, with a great cast, and paced very well for the most part. If you have an interest in World War 2 or war dramas in general, I would recommend checking it out.
